To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Pola Cultural Research Institute, which continues to conduct wide-ranging research into cosmetics, the exhibition "Celebrations" will be held at the Pola Museum Annex in Ginza, Tokyo, from January 15 to February 21, 2016.
Powdering, lining the eyebrows, and applying rouge. Since the Edo period, women have felt a thrill not only from dressing for weddings and other special occasions, but also from everyday makeup. Though times have changed, the spirit and sensibility underlying what it means to look beautiful still lives on in our modern-day "fashion." Based around the keywords "makeup, women, and aesthetic sense," the exhibition explores the four themes of "Japanese" formal attire celebrating the start of the new year: "Wedding," "Coming of Age," "Special Attire," and "Auspicious Patterns." The exhibits will include wedding makeup tools such as a round mirror, a round mirror box, and a dressing stand, as well as a set of tools for blackening teeth, as well as the Edo period etiquette book "Kessho Byouzaiku Kuchiden" which traces the changes in eyebrow shaping, wedding attire "Uchikake with a pine, bamboo, plum, crane and turtle pattern on a white silk background" featuring designs of pine, bamboo, plum, and a crane and turtle, "A box with a red and white plum and treasure pattern", a "Takasago character pattern mirror" and a "pine, bamboo, plum, crane and turtle fluttering hairpin" which were popular as lucky charms regardless of status or class.
