"The Aesthetics of BORO" will be held at the Kobe Fashion Museum. Approximately 100 items, including work clothes, are on display as folk cultural assets.

Jan 23, 2016

The "Aesthetics of BORO" exhibition, featuring approximately 100 items including work clothes from the Tohoku region, designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties, opened at the Kobe Fashion Museum on January 23rd.

Boro refers to clothing made by stitching and layering limited scraps of fabric. In recent years, the word "BORO" has become a globally recognized term, attracting attention in the fashion world in Paris and elsewhere.

The exhibition showcases the charms of boro, kogin embroidery, and diamond embroidery found in work clothes from the Tohoku region, such as tatsuke (cloth), maedare (cloth), and nagagi (cloth), designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties, selected from the 20,000 antique folk items collected by Aomori folklorist Chuzaburo Tanaka through his lifetime of research and study. Additionally, works by three designers - keisuke kanda, matohu, and writtenafterwards - will be on display, as well as works by MODECO, a product brand that promotes environmental conservation.

During the period, there will also be a lecture entitled "Tanaka Chuzaburo and BORO: Its Design" (free participation, registration required), as well as workshops entitled "Kogin Embroidery Accessories" and "Starting Nanbu Diamond Embroidery with Gourd Patterns" (both participation fees are 500 yen, registration required).
