A large-scale retrospective of Living National Treasure and textile artist Fukumi Shimura, "Shimura Fukumi: Return to Rag," will open on February 2nd at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. Shimura's works, woven with threads dyed with natural dyes from plants, have earned her international acclaim. In 2014, she received the 30th Kyoto Prize (Arts and Philosophy) for her recognition as "an artist who continues to contemplate the fundamental human value of coexistence with nature through the creation of tsumugi silk, the crystallization of folk wisdom," and in 2015, she was awarded the Order of Culture. This exhibition, held to commemorate her receiving the Order of Culture, will feature a selection of her most representative works, from her earliest to her most recent. It will explore her creative journey spanning six decades while also delving into the essence of Shimura's appeal and art. During the exhibition, there will be a talk between Shimura and Kumakura Isao (President of Shizuoka University of Art and Culture) titled "Entering the Tea Room Wearing a Tsumugi Kimono" on February 13th, a lecture by Shimura titled "Returning to Rag Clothes" on March 6th, and a kids' program tour titled "What Color Is It?" on February 20th and March 12th.
