Isetan Shinjuku is hosting the "Fashion, Kimono, and Living Things" exhibition at the Center Park/TOKYO Liberation Zone on the second floor of the main building until January 26th, proposing new ways to style kimono. Through the lens of three kimono lovers—Kimono Director CHOKO, illustrator Aya Hasegawa, and designer Tomoko Yamada of highcaloryotome—the exhibition showcases kimono and kimono accessories as a new value that transcends the boundaries between Japanese and Western styles. Sagimori, a cutting-edge designer who won the Newcomer Award and Shiseido Encouragement Award at the 28th Mainichi Fashion Awards in 2010, expresses the delicate aesthetic and inner strength of Japanese women, based on the concepts of feminine beauty, allure, transience, and strength, and continues to take on new challenges in collaboration with various creators. At this event, kimonos and dresses made from the same patterned fabric will be on sale, as well as Japanese bags with deer designs and accessories such as "embroidered bag head dresses." (See below for details on the bag head dress custom order event.)
Kimono director CHOKO, whose brand concept is "SPUNKY KIMONO STYLE," will introduce products such as "ring-ring obijime" (sash belts) that add a playful touch to obi belts, "nekomata tyre cuffs," leopard print obiage (sash belts), and sandals.
Illustrator Aya Hasegawa, whose love of kimono led her to launch her own yukata brand, poisson do'r, in 2008 with the concept of "the world of kimono created by an illustrator," will sell accessories and obi belts featuring her illustrations of "living things," mainly cats. Tomoko Yamada of High Calorie Otome, who designs kimonos and Japanese accessories under the motto of "making unserious things seriously," will also be showcasing a lineup of obi sashes, cushions, brooches, and other items featuring living creatures like cats. Aguri Sagimori, CHOKO, and Tomoko Yamada will be visiting the venue every day during the event. There will also be a special photo booth where you can take photos in kimono, and the first 10 customers who spend over ¥32,400 (tax included) will receive a limited-edition CHOKO pouch. The store's buyer commented, "Through this event, we want to convey the 'freedom of fashion.' We hope that by not only enjoying kimonos as a traditional style, but also recognizing them as a new value, we can broaden the scope of kimono styles, and thus fashion. We hope that visitors will discover their favorite kimono items, such as modern haori and obi sashes, which may inspire them to try kimono."
