From the 24th to the 29th, the Mikimoto flagship store will host the "Yamashita Fumiko Kihachijo Exhibition: The Flower of Dyeing and Weaving" in the Mikimoto Hall on the 6th floor. The exhibition will feature 27 new pieces, including kimono fabrics (bolts of fabric) and ukihachijo patterns, created by Fumiko Yamashita, the fourth generation of the Yamashita family, a family that has been making Kihachijo fabrics on Hachijo Island for generations. The exhibition will also feature the "Eikancho," a collection of Kihachijo pattern samples from the Edo period. The Yamashita family is particular about the silk thread they use, using the same silk thread as the "Koishimaru" silkworms, a traditional Japanese breed raised at the Imperial Palace Silk Farm. Kihachijo, considered one of Japan's three major tsumugi silks, was presented to the shogunate during the Edo period and was designated an intangible cultural property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 1984. This silk fabric has been passed down on Hachijojima since ancient times, and is made using plants native to Hachijojima. The silk threads are dyed in three colors: yellow, birch, and black, and then hand-woven.
