Q5. Thoughts on Tokyo Fashion Week
A:
I travel to Paris Fashion Week regularly, so I can't help but compare the two, but I think the crucial difference is whether or not there is a maison. Talented designers from all over the world aspire to become creative directors at Paris fashion houses, and since that hierarchy exists in Paris, the environment for designers must be very different from that in Tokyo.
However, this is by no means a negative thing, and I feel that Tokyo has a strong identity of its own. This is street-based culture and fashion that has been cultivated in an environment where the class society that exists to some extent in Europe and the United States is almost non-existent. I think that a variety of street cultures have been born in Tokyo, which is overwhelmingly large and has a large population in the world.
If Tokyo Fashion Week focuses on street culture and fashion that is uniquely Tokyo, rather than trying to get closer to or surpass fashion shows in Paris and New York, it may become an entity that overseas buyers cannot ignore.
