Gucci's iconic "Bamboo" collection is all here, including bags available exclusively worldwide.

Jul 17, 2013

From July 17th to 23rd, the "Gucci Bamboo Collection 2013," an event featuring Gucci's iconic bamboo, was held at The Stage on the first floor of Isetan Shinjuku. The event featured the world premiere of the small size (159,600 yen) of the "Bamboo Shopper," featuring a bamboo handle. This new size follows the medium and large sizes and comes in four colors: black, red, orange, and navy. A jade green color is available exclusively at the store. The Bamboo Shopper is lighter than previous bags, and its strap makes it a popular leather bag for everyday use. Also featured in the fashion show was the new "Ladylock," a new collection for this fall/winter collection, featuring a dark bamboo handle and metal closure. It's available in a variety of colors and materials, including python and ostrich. Other items on offer include bamboo pochettes, scarves, watches, accessories and other miscellaneous items.

Bamboo bags were created when artisans wanted to create elegant bags amid the shortage of materials after the war. Bamboo bags made in the 1950s and 1960s have been imported from Italy and are on display at the venue. The history and craftsmanship of bamboo bags are also expressed through a video showing artisans heating bamboo over a banner to shape it into semicircular handles.
