Four of Gucci's most skilled artisans have come to Japan to create and sell handbags, wallets, and other items in-store at the "ARTISAN CORNER" at Isetan Shinjuku Main Building's The Stage on the first floor until Tuesday, March 12th. Since its founding in Florence, Italy in 1921, Gucci has prided itself on crafting all of its products, with the exception of watches, in Italy by artisans with skills handed down through generations. CEO Patrizio Di Marco launched the "Artisan Corner" in March 2010, hoping to allow more people to experience the exceptional craftsmanship that has been passed down since Gucci's founding. The event began in Japan and has since toured the world. "Gucci is unique in that it allows customers to see the artisanal production process in front of their very eyes," a representative said proudly. Because it takes more than 12 hours to make one bag, the event allows visitors to see the entire process from start to finish. Each craftsman is divided into different sections: bag making, wallet making, sewing, and initial engraving. The limited-edition items are available for purchase on the spot. The limited-edition items are available in limited materials and colors. These include the blue "Soft Stirrup" and "New Jackie" bags made from nubuck lamb leather, as well as the purple "Soho" bag featuring the Interlocking G logo and a karung (water snake) pattern. Bags range in price from 134,000 yen to 278,250 yen. Customers who purchase these items can have their initials engraved in gold or silver on the spot. This engraving is only available to special clients, such as royalty and Madonna, or when purchased in the "Artisan Corner."
In addition, in 2013 Gucci sponsored the "REVALUE NIPPON PROJECT," which was formed with the aim of preserving and developing traditional Japanese culture and whose representative director is Hidetoshi Nakata. For this project, a special edition python bamboo bag with a "bamboo" theme was also released, with a limited run of three pieces. The price is 414,750 yen.
