Maison Kitsuné's first two street-level stores in Japan open simultaneously, offering barista-brewed coffee in a tea-ceremony-style space

Jan 25, 2013

On February 15th, MAISON KITSUNÉ will open its first Japanese street-level store in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. Two stores will open simultaneously: "Maison Kitsuné," which will feature the brand's ready-to-wear collection, and "CAFÉ KITSUNÉ," which will carry records, CDs, polo shirts, and T-shirts from the "Kitsuné Tee" and "Parisien" lines. Masaya Kuroki, one of the brand's founders, conceived the spatial design and store image of the Tokyo store. While retaining the architectural image of the Paris store, the store adopted a Haussmannian style and incorporated traditional Japanese architectural elements. The interior of "Maison Kitsuné" features custom-made tatami mats and sliding doors, and the floors are covered in monogram parquet. Enter Cafe Kitsuné via an approach surrounded by checkered paving and bamboo fences. Like teahouse culture, the space emphasizes intimate social interaction, featuring original wallpaper inspired by the Edo period. Reminiscent of a teahouse, Cafe Kitsuné serves coffee brewed by baristas trained under Eiichi Kunitomo, producer of Omotesando Coffee. French brand Maison Kitsuné was founded in 2002 by Gildas Loaec, former manager of Daft Punk, and Masaya Kuroki, who previously worked at an architecture firm. Popular for its concept of fusing music, fashion, and design, blending tradition with modern approaches, the brand is stocked by brands such as Colette, Dover Street Market Comme des Garçons, and 10 Corso Como. Its first flagship store opened in Paris in 2008. In January of this year, they presented their women's collection in a show format for the first time at Pitti W in Florence. The two have also been appointed artistic directors of the French brand PETIT BATEAU.
