Experience the World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go with all five senses at the film festival "CINEMA CARAVAN in Shirakawa-go"

Jul 9, 2015

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture, being registered as a World Heritage Site, the film festival "CINEMA CARAVAN in Shirakawa-go" will be held from July 18th to 20th, featuring "CINEMA CARAVAN," a mobile cinema that operates both domestically and internationally.

The festival, which is themed "Experience Shirakawa-go with all five senses," will feature a temporary screen created using techniques such as thatching and straw rope used to build Gassho-zukuri houses. A lineup of films suitable for families and children will be screened alongside the pristine Japanese landscapes and nature seen in the Gassho-zukuri houses and the Minkaen (traditional Japanese garden) that will serve as the festival venue.

In addition, there will be a food event called "Share the Table," where you can experience the various local cultures of the Hida region and Gifu Prefecture, including ingredients, cooking methods, and folk crafts. Chef Rinpei Yoshikawa of Pignon restaurant in Kamiyamacho, Shibuya, and his team will offer a summer dinner featuring the bounty of the mountains and the sea, featuring locally grown vegetables, Hida beef, and Toyama seafood.

In addition, as Shirakawa Village is located at the foot of Mount Haku, one of Japan's three most famous mountains, long trail and hiking events will also be held. Furthermore, CINEMA CARAVAN artists will be staying in abandoned school buildings and unused facilities during the preparation period for the event, mastering Hida woodworking techniques, interacting with villagers through food and culture, and engaging in various interactions such as extracurricular classes at Shirakawa-go Gakuen. Furthermore, after the event, there will be screenings of videos documenting the event preparations and the day itself, and plans include collaborations between CINEMA CARAVAN artists and the diverse culture of the Hida region, including woodworking, in interior design projects.
