Adidas unveils concept shoe made from recycled ocean waste, a unique example of environmental conservation

Jul 9, 2015

Adidas unveiled a concept shoe commemorating its partnership with Parley for the Oceans, which works to protect the marine environment.

On June 29th, an event was held at the United Nations Headquarters, bringing together experts, scientists, entrepreneurs, and creators to discuss the current state of the oceans. During the event, Adidas unveiled a unique prototype created as a result of its collaboration with Parley for the Oceans.

The shoe unveiled the world's first shoe upper made 100% from yarn and fiber recovered and recycled from marine debris and illegally set deep-sea gillnets. The gillnets used were finally recovered off the coast of West Africa by Sea Shepherd, an environmental organization dedicated to protecting marine life and a partner organization of Parley for the Oceans, after a 110-day pursuit of illegal fishing vessels.

The concept shoe unveiled today signals the direction Adidas and Parley for the Oceans are heading, ahead of the launch of consumer products made from recycled ocean plastic waste in the second half of the year. "We couldn't be prouder that Adidas has joined our mission and is supporting our partnership with their creativity, demonstrating that ocean plastic can be turned into something cool," said Cyril Gucci, founder of Parley for the Oceans.
