Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka Exit Area Redevelopment to be Underway. Pedestrian Deck to Make Area Barrier-Free

Jun 19, 2014

Following the approval of the city plan by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka Exit District Redevelopment Preparatory Association and Tokyu Land Corporation are moving from the planning stage to concrete development.

Aiming to revitalize the area around Shibuya Station, the project will create an urban core that will serve as a landmark at the gateway to the Sakuragaoka district. Pedestrian routes at deck level, such as a north-south crossing of National Route 246 and an east-west passageway crossing the JR line, will be linked to the ground level, creating a multi-layered pedestrian network. Block reorganization will create a wide pedestrian deck above the newly constructed Auxiliary Urban Planning Road No. 18, providing barrier-free access to the hills behind the Sakuragaoka district and Shibuya Station.

Additionally, the project will support residents and businesspeople with multilingual facilities, including an international medical facility with health management capabilities, serviced apartments for short- to medium-term stays for domestic and international businesspeople, and a childcare center for preschool children.

By combining the cutting-edge technology and knowledge of universities with the imagination of Shibuya's creative content industry, the facility will foster Shibuya-originated businesses and companies through industry-academia collaboration. It aims to enhance Shibuya's creative content industry and strengthen its international competitiveness, while also developing corporate support facilities. Plans are underway to open in 2020, with high-grade offices on the mid- and upper floors, commercial facilities on the lower floors, and a residential building located close to Shibuya Station.
