The art gallery "Gallery Little High" will open in Nakano Broadway on July 10th. Its inaugural exhibition, "Kobayashi Kazushi: Musisum - Thoughts on Sculpted Insects," will run until the 22nd.
The exhibition title is a portmanteau of "insect" (mushi) and "animism (the belief that all things have a soul)." Kobayashi's life's work includes cutting out and folding paper insects from a single sheet of paper into three-dimensional shapes so realistic they could fool even real insects. "If humans are merely a part of nature, then humans and insects are the same beings. It's fine to change your perspective and look at the human world from the insect's point of view, and I've been doing that since I was a child," Kobayashi commented.
After working as a designer for Issey Miyake, Kobayashi went independent. His works have been exhibited at Isetan Shinjuku, Maison Hermès, the Ginza Sony Building, and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Roppongi, among others. He has worked on costume design, stage productions, videos, commercials, and other projects with themes of "nature" and "physicality." His works are owned by artists such as U2 guitarist The Edge and The Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood. Gallery Little High opened in Nakano Broadway, a subculture mecca visited by 8 million people annually from Japan and abroad. It was created as a "street-side art gallery" that anyone can casually drop into. Owner Hitoshi Kodaka says, "Nakano Broadway visitors have a keen eye for objects, and I believe there is a pent-up demand for art." The concept is a "project and rental gallery that connects people with art," where visitors can encounter high-quality art in a small, compact (LITTLE) space.
