Jun 27, 2014

The Japan Media Arts Festival, a comprehensive media arts festival sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, is celebrating its 18th anniversary this year. The festival will recognize outstanding works in four categories: Art, Entertainment, Animation, and Animation, and provide an opportunity to view the award-winning works. The festival is open to works completed or released within the past year, from a wide range of countries around the world, regardless of whether they are professional, amateur, independent, or commercial. After review by a jury, the Grand Prize, Excellence Award, New Face Award, Jury Recommendation, and Lifetime Achievement Award will be announced in late November. An exhibition of the winning works will be exhibited at the National Art Center, Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo from February 4 to 15, 2015, and will also be showcased internationally. The submission period ends at 6:00 PM on September 2 (JST). The Japan Media Arts Festival, first held in 1997, attracted a record 4,347 works from 84 countries and regions around the world last year for its 17th edition. "Sound of Honda/ Ayrton Senna 1989," an installation by Daito Manabe and others that recreates the driving data of legendary F1 racer Ayrton Senna using sound and light, won the Entertainment category, while Hirohiko Araki's "JoJolion: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 8," which is now in its 28th year of serialization, won the Grand Prize in the Manga category. Previous winners include Sony's dog-like robot "AIBO" (2000, Digital Art category), Takehiko Inoue's manga depicting Miyamoto Musashi, "Vagabond" (2001, Manga category), Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" (2002, Animation category), home video game "Wii Sports" (2008, Entertainment category), and "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" (2012, Animation category), which was viewed beyond the boundaries of late-night anime.
