CUNE covered in the insecticide Balsan [14-15 AW Tokyo]

Mar 18, 2014

"Kawasaki," "gyoza," "cabbage cores"... what do these things all have in common? The answer lies in the collection theme of Yuki Yasuda's fashion brand, CUNE. CUNE, which claims to be neither a fashion brand nor a fashion statement, "just barely creates clothes." The 14-15 Autumn/Winter collection, presented in the form of an installation on March 17, was themed around "Valsan," a smoke-based insecticide manufactured and sold by Lion. The venue, located in the love hotel district of Dogenzaka, Shibuya, was a hoot. Smoke was blazing, creating the illusion of insecticide in progress (though the smoke is harmless), and clothing adorned with "Valsan" prints was on display. This time, everything was men's. The Balsan logo, in various sizes, covered suits and coats. Bondage pants were printed on the quilted front, exuding no punk spirit. The textile, featuring rows of Balsan cans, was reminiscent of Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans. While the collection may seem like a prank at first glance, the clothes are elaborately detailed. Examples include a herringbone jacket with a needle-punched smoke pattern and a duffle coat with acrylic toggles that encapsulate a Balsan packaging. Details incorporate women's specifications, such as a right-front fastening. Long sweatshirt dresses, tulle bottoms, round-collar shirts, and jackets with pleated skirts create a feminine atmosphere. Given the theme, anything goes. The accessories that go with these pieces are what the brand calls "belly warmers." Belly warmers include riders' jackets, coats, cardigans, sweatshirts, and down jackets. Designed to be coordinated over outerwear, they are oversized and worn by hanging from the shoulders with straps. While they may look like skirts, they're not. Pockets would be useful, but since these are simply "belly warmers," they're omitted. While the brand's ideas are strange, there's apparently no deeper meaning to them. It's pointless to even think about them.
