Lars von Trier's latest film, "NYMPH()MANIAC," which sparked controversy upon its overseas release due to Charlotte Gainsbourg's portrayal of a nymphomaniac, will be released in Japan this fall. Trier, known for his dark and nightmarish works such as "The Sea," "Dancer in the Dark," and "Dogville," is the final installment in his depression trilogy, which follows "Antichrist" and "Melancholia." Dealing with the theme of "female sexuality," the film poetically and humorously depicts the life of a self-aware nymphomaniac (= nymphomaniac) over eight long chapters (Vol. 1: 117 minutes, Vol. 2: 123 minutes). The story begins on a freezing winter evening when an elderly bachelor, Seligman, comes to the aid of a woman named Jo who has collapsed in an alleyway. After she recovers, Seligman poetically describes her life filled with lust, and the story unfolds... Charlotte Gainsbourg gives a passionate performance as the protagonist, Jo, who indulges in sex with numerous men, and her co-star, Shia LaBeouf from "Transformers," also performs an explicit sex scene. The supporting cast is headlined by a star-studded cast including Uma Thurman from "Kill Bill," Willem Dafoe from "Antichrist," Christian Slater from "True Romance," Jamie Bell from "Billy Elliot," Jean-Marc Barr from "The Big Blue," and Stellan Skarsgård from "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." Photographer Shoichi Kajino, a huge Gainsbourg fan, saw the film during Paris Fashion Week in 2014-15 Autumn/Winter. He commented on his blog, "It's awful, it's terrible. It's so painful I can't watch it."
