On March 4th, Julie de Libran's SONIA RYKIEL held its Fall/Winter 2017-18 collection show at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
While continuing the uniform style from the previous season, organic materials were used to add natural elements. The collection also featured motifs taken from the work of Niki de Saint Phalle, a world-renowned artist known for her avant-garde style, creating an artistic atmosphere. The words "Les nanas au pouvoir" ("Strong Women"), inspired by Niki de Saint Phalle's famous sculpture "Nana," were featured as intarsia on the knitwear. Other touches of Niki de Saint Phalle's essence were scattered throughout the collection, including a print that mixed Niki de Saint Phalle's floral designs with the brand's signature lip motif, and artsy floral embroidery featuring raw-edged pieces. While masculine-feminine pieces dominated the collection, decorative elements were added, such as stitching with wool yarn used in tweed fabrics and appliquéd tweed pieces. A cape coat with a square hem and a faux fur coat with military-style gold buttons were inspired by blankets as a form of protection. As for knitwear, a specialty of the brand, this season saw the arrival of a monochrome jacquard with a hand-embroidered look. Numerous strands of white thread dangled, as if the stitching had been stopped midway. However, this evoked a sense of "completeness through incompleteness," perfectly complementing the artistic dimension that permeated the entire collection.
