In recent years, the fashion industry has been increasingly focused on healthier models, due to the issue of underweight models. Meanwhile, Karl Lagerfeld's comments on a French TV show, "Who wants to see voluptuous women walking down the catwalk?" culminated in a lawsuit filed by a women's pressure group. His comments were also mentioned in his recently published book, "The World According to Karl." He reiterated his beliefs in the book, including that "housewives sitting in front of the TV with a bag of chips are the ones who criticize thin models," and that "it's overweight people with health problems who are putting a strain on the French social security system." Lagerfeld himself successfully lost approximately 42 kilograms over 10 years ago. Since then, he has made critical statements about obese people in his books and in the media. He previously sparked controversy by calling singer Adele "a little overweight."
The group "Belle, Ronde, Sexy et Je M'assume (Beautiful, Curvy, Sexy and Fine with It)," which advocates for the rights of curvy women, filed a lawsuit calling his comments "slanderous and prejudiced." Aubrielle, the group's director, told AFP, "We're sick of these derogatory comments from celebrities. They have a negative impact on girls at a vulnerable age and contribute to bullying at school and prejudice in the workplace."
