The theme of LAD MUSICIAN's 2014 Spring/Summer collection is "Minimal Art Rock 70." It's dedicated to the American abstract painter Mark Rothko, who passed away in 1970. Designer Yuichi Kuroda reflects Rothko's artistic philosophy in his designs. The color palette includes maroon, black, orange, and royal blue. Cotton-linen knitwear incorporates mohair to create the color blocks seen in Rothko's works. The striped jacquard knitwear also uses variations in color, material, and knitting techniques to recreate the gradations Rothko created through layered paint. Jackets, blousons, and long shirts feature minimalist, boxy silhouettes without collars or other embellishments. Cropped wide-leg pants and shorts feature tucks at the front, while slim-fit pants are finished with matching aprons for a square silhouette. The camouflage pattern is meticulously hand-painted. The all-over graphic, made of bird feathers, was inspired by the paintings of Franz Kline, an abstract painter who was active at the same time as Rothko.
The venue was filled with smoke and lighting, creating vague rectangular shapes reminiscent of Rothko's paintings, and the show began with a piano melody by Arvo Pärt. Midway through the show, the music changed to noisy music by Peter Kember's project, Experimental Audio Research, tracing Rothko's Abstract Expressionism through sound production.
