ASVOFF TOKYO 2013, a short film festival organized by French fashion journalist Diane Pernet, kicked off at IDOL Tokyo in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. Diane herself visited Japan and appeared at the press conference on November 29th. The event began in 2008 as a short film festival themed around "fashion, style, and beauty." It premieres every year in Paris and travels to major cities around the world, including New York, London, and Milan, and this will be its fifth time in Japan. This year's festival will screen 43 films, mainly those that premiered in Paris. Appearing in her signature all-black outfit, Diane said, "I quit my job as a fashion designer and went to Paris to work as a film costume designer, which is what got me thinking about fashion films. In 2006, when ELEY KISHIMOTO presented their first men's collection in London, I was asked to make a documentary, and that's when I got the idea that I could do something with it. When I first started ASVOFF, I received a lot of videos that were compilations of fashion photoshoots, but I think fashion films are videos with a story, like Roman Polanski's "Therapy" for Prada. I hope that by having creators from around the world submit their works to ASVOFF, they can inspire each other and move in the same direction. Tokyo is the most fashionable city in the world, so it's the perfect place to host the event." Among the works on display, she said her favorites are "Holi Holy" and "She Said, She Said." Regarding the Japanese fashion scene, she cited UNDERCOVER as a noteworthy brand, saying, "Their creativity in doing things that ordinary people don't do is intriguing. I saw mame's collection during my recent visit to Japan. I'd also like to keep an eye on designers who aren't yet in the spotlight." Diane is a Paris-based fashion critic and video journalist. She discovers young talent at fashion weeks and fashion schools around the world. Since 2005, she has run her own blog, "A SHADED VIEW ON FASHION," providing the latest information on the creative industries around the world, with a focus on the fashion industry. Inside the monochromatic interior of the venue, IDOL, a photo spot was set up to frame Diane, and a buzz-like photo piece featuring Diane by illustrator MITJABOKU was displayed. The low admission price of 1,500 yen targeted a younger demographic, creating a space designed to enhance visitor enjoyment. Staff will wear special T-shirts made by American Apparel exclusively for Japan as uniforms. This reflects the desire to further promote ASVOFF in Japan, now in its fifth year.
During the event, talk shows are also scheduled with ANREALAGE designer Kunihiko Morinaga, Rhizomatiks' Daito Manabe, Diane Pernet, and fashion blogger Misha Janette.
