Gucci archive exhibition tracing its history begins at Marunouchi KITTE, with Yusuke Iseya and Emi Takei also calling for charity

Nov 16, 2013

Gucci's "ICONS OF HERITAGE" exhibition has opened in the atrium on the first floor of KITTE (formerly the Tokyo Central Post Office) in Marunouchi, Tokyo.
In 2011, Gucci opened the Gucci Museo in Florence, its birthplace, to celebrate its 90th anniversary. The museum showcases the traditional craftsmanship of Italian artisans and displays many of the brand's iconic products throughout its history.
This exhibition brings together a selection of the most iconic pieces housed in the Gucci Museo. The centerpiece of the venue features the oldest piece on display, a goatskin trunk from the 1920s, as well as suitcases beloved by jet-setters.
In Japan for the first time, items such as a boot-shaped ashtray, a blanket holder, a picnic basket with a plastic tea set, and a backgammon set offer a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of Gucci fans.

A film also introduces the manufacturing process of bamboo bags, which were born from an artisan's revolutionary idea of making handles out of bamboo. The walls of the venue are exhibited with bamboo bags made in different years and made from different materials, as well as the Flora scarf designed by Vittorio Accornero, including the "Flora" scarf made for Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco in 1966.

Also, charity stamps (sheets of 10 80-yen stamps, 3,150 yen) are on sale, and can only be purchased at the venue. The stamps feature the Gucci Museo building, the Gucci crest, and vintage trademarks, and all proceeds from the sale will be used to support the education of children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. At the opening reception held on November 15th, Yusuke Iseya, representative of Reverse Project, who supports Gucci's social contribution activities and works with the brand, and Emi Takei, who attends the Milan Fashion Week as an ambassador for Gucci Japan, appeared and called for participation in Gucci's charity. Gucci continues to sell charity items and donate the proceeds to support the education of children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Currently, Gucci is providing a three-year scholarship to a high school student living in Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, through the UNESCO Association Educational Support Scholarship - GUCCI Scholarship. This summer, the brand also released a collaboration bag with Sendaihira, a silk fabric that has been handed down in Sendai since the Edo period, with all proceeds donated to the city.
