Gucci's "Bamboo Bag" collaborates with Sendai-daira, with all sales to be donated to Sendai

Jul 23, 2013

Gucci has released a special edition of its signature bamboo bag in collaboration with Sendaihira, a silk weaving company that has been passed down in Sendai since the Edo period. This is the first project initiated at the initiative of the city of Sendai. Sendaihira is a silk weaving company produced by the limited partnership. Its traditional techniques have been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property, and two generations of founders, Yoshio Koda and his predecessor, Eisuke Koda, have been recognized as Living National Treasures. This marks the first time that this fabric, originally used for hakama (traditional Japanese hakama) fabric, has been used in a handbag. The limited edition bag, named "Zuihō" (Sacred Treasure), inspired by Sendai, combines Sendaihira with calf leather and features bamboo handles and tassels. Available in mandarin, brown, and navy, it is priced at 420,000 yen.

It is currently on sale at the Sendai Fujisaki Gucci Shop, and will be available at major Gucci shops nationwide from September 1st. In addition, all proceeds from the sale of this bag will be donated to Sendai City to support industrial recovery following the Great East Japan Earthquake.

In addition, Gucci is also releasing the third series of Japan-exclusive charity bracelets this month to support the education of children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
