"No Comment by Gainsbourg," a documentary film about the multitalented composer, lyricist, singer, film director, and actor, will be released in Japan in the summer of 2013.
Gainsbourg was born in Paris in 1928 to parents who emigrated to Russia after fleeing the chaos of the Russian Revolution. He aspired to be a painter as a young man, but switched to music and made his debut as a singer. His radical and unconventional style, featuring rebellious content and explicit sexual depictions, dominated the French pop music scene in the late 1960s and 1970s.
While garnering attention for his exceptional talent, he also constantly made headlines with his glamorous history of relationships with women, including his third wife, Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot, Juliette Greco, and Bambou. At the same time, he also struggled with his public image as an honest man.
This film mainly features extensive monologues by Gainsbourg himself and valuable archive footage, focusing on his inner self and depicting his life as a singer, from his background to scandals and women. It also features rare footage and comments from Jane and other "Gainsbourg women," the partners in his romantic relationships.
The film will be screened at Bunkamura Le Cinema and other theaters nationwide.
