The 11th session of "Think of Fashion," a group dedicated to exploring cultural and social phenomena related to people's clothing, will be held at the Coromoza Fashion Laboratory in Jingumae, Tokyo, on the 25th at 6:00 PM. The theme of this session will be "Madeleine Vionnet: Fashion and the 'Beautiful Body.'" Madeleine Vionnet, known for inventing the bias cut, will focus on the concerns about the relationship between the body and fashion that underpinned her technological innovations. Taking into account the social context in which she was active from the early 20th century through World War II, the session will explore the ideal body image that served as the foundation of her creative work through detailed analysis of her works, focusing on contemporary art and literary works. The lecture will be led by Akari Ii, a former fashion magazine editor and translator who now teaches fashion and representational culture at Atsumi Women's University and Waseda University. Born in 1876, Vionnet was a couturier who was admired by many designers, including Balenciaga, and described by Issei Miyake as a "quiet revolutionary." After gaining experience under Jacques Doucet, she founded her own fashion house in 1912. Although forced to temporarily close due to the effects of World War I, she reopened after the war ended. She developed innovative techniques such as draping using long-cut crepe fabric and bias cutting. She died in 1975.
