The ninth session of "Think of Fashion," a group that considers cultural and social phenomena related to people's clothing, will be held at the Harajuku co-working space "Colomosa Fashion Laboratory" on the 23rd of next month, starting at 6:00 PM.
The theme of this session will be "Claire McCardell: Pioneer of Contemporary Fashion." The lecture will be given by Hirofumi Ashida, full-time lecturer at the Kyoto Seika University School of Popular Culture. While fashion history is often told from a European-centric perspective, this lecture will focus on American designer Clair McCardell, who played a key role in the origins of contemporary fashion. We will compare her work with that of her contemporaries and examine the characteristics of her designs. The fee is 2,000 yen, including one drink.
Born in 1905, McCardell studied fashion at the School of Arts and Crafts in New York and was influenced by Madeleine Vionnet while studying in Paris. She founded Claire McCardell in 1940 and won the Coty Award, the most prestigious award in the American fashion industry, in 1944. She created simple, casual, and functional women's clothing for the middle class, making a significant contribution to the birth of the "American look." In 1987, McCardell was selected alongside Madeleine Vionnet and Rei Kawakubo for the "Three Women" exhibition, held at the Museum of Art at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, which spotlighted three of the 20th century's most important female designers.
