What was the Comme des Garçons controversy and the Un Un revolution? Considering the DC brand boom through the ideological debate of the 1980s

May 9, 2013

The eighth session of "Think of Fashion," a group that explores cultural and social phenomena related to people's clothing, will be held at the cafe and gallery "Blockhouse" in Jingumae, Shibuya Ward, starting at 6 PM on the 26th. The theme of this session is "The Comme des Garçons Controversy and the An An Revolution: Considering the DC Brand Boom." Masahito Inoue, a lecturer at Mukogawa Women's University's School of Life and Environmental Studies, will guide the discussion, exploring the society that brought about the "DC Brand Boom" through the terms "Comme des Garçons Controversy" and "An An Revolution." Philosopher Yutaka Haniya discovered an article in the September 21, 1984, issue of Magazine House's magazine "An An" featuring critic Takaaki Yoshimoto wearing Comme des Garçons in his home study. When Yoshimoto Takaaki, a leading figure in contemporary thought, criticized the commercial for a "rip-off product," Yoshimoto responded by saying, "Kodansha, the publisher of your 'Shirei,' is also squandering profits with its expensive 'Shirei.'" The two exchanged insults, calling each other "idiots" and "morons." While the discussion about Comme des Garçons only comes at the end of the exchange, this debate explores the background to the DC brand boom at the time.
