The Pola Museum of Art, which closed on April 3, reopened on June 1 and will host the exhibition "Monet and Matisse: Another Paradise" from June 1 to November 3. The exhibition was originally scheduled to feature 90 works by Monet and Matisse, including 20 works on loan from 10 overseas locations and approximately 30 works from 21 domestic locations. However, due to the recent impact of COVID-19, the exhibition was forced to postpone the display of the 20 overseas loan works. The exhibition content has been revised at the opening, and the museum will feature approximately 70 works by Monet and Matisse, including approximately 30 works on loan from Japan, as well as approximately 20 works by related artists from the museum's collection, for a total of approximately 90 works.

■Overview
In France from the 19th to 20th centuries, amidst a turbulent social situation characterized by rapid modernization and repeated wars, a longing for "somewhere other than here" began to appear in literature and art. For Monet and Matisse, "Paradise" was an indispensable subject for their paintings, as well as a place for their creations and the environment they lived in. This exhibition examines how these two artists created "Paradise" and sublimated it into their artworks.

Bridget Riley (1931-)
A leading painter of "Op Art," a style of painting that utilizes optical illusions and the principles of vision. Her meticulously calculated geometric patterns create illusions in the viewer, making the work appear to waver or flicker. A connection to Seurat's color theory has also been noted.
Work Description
This work is one of a series of striped works that Riley began working on in 1980. The entire painting is covered with bright, vivid colors, a style inherited from Monet and other Impressionist painters, and later Matisse and others.

New Acquisition (First Public Viewing)

Ben Nicholson (1894-1982)
A painter representing 20th-century British abstract art. While producing landscapes and still lifes, he also worked on abstract painting. In addition to Cézanne, he incorporated new artistic trends such as Cubism by Picasso and Braque, and Abstract Constructivism by Mondrian and others.
Work Description
The realistic view of the harbor outside the window is fused with the geometric shapes of the still life inside. Matisse also repeatedly tackled the challenge of spatial expression, reconstructing interior and exterior motifs separated by a window on a single canvas.

Marco del Re (1950-2019)
A representative contemporary Italian painter with a deep knowledge of art history, mythology, and literature, who combined classical learning with a modern style. In 2011, a solo exhibition at Galerie Maeght focused on Matisse's style, drawing widespread attention for its organic forms of color and linework.

Work Description
Marco del Re created these interior paintings during his stay at Le Rêve in Vence, where Matisse once had his studio. In addition to themes such as still lifes and nudes, the vivid colors and intricately combined decorative patterns are reminiscent of many of Matisse's works.
