On September 13, A. Lange & Söhne will unveil a platinum version of the Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar with a black dial. The off-center design and peripheral monthly ring lend this sophisticated complication an original look.

This new addition to the series follows the white gold model with a solid pink gold dial and the pink gold model with a solid gray-silver dial, both limited to 150 pieces, introduced in April 2021. The dark dial color enhances the moon phase display with day/night indicator.

First presented two years ago, the Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar is exclusively equipped with its namesake complication and offers a captivating combination of the highest standards of precision, design, and originality. The new model, with a 41.9 mm platinum 950 case, complements this family with its refined black dial and outsize date. The month ring forms the framework for all displays, while the outsize date and leap year numerals provide a stark contrast against the black background. All calendar displays change instantly, ensuring precise reading at all times. The calendar displays can be adjusted collectively or individually using the setting pushers. Once correctly set, the watch is programmed to accurately advance each month, requiring no adjustment until the year 2100.

A Lange-specific perpetual calendar
In 2001, A. Lange & Söhne's ambitious development team took on the enormous challenge of designing a perpetual calendar capable of tracking the varying lengths of months throughout the year, even in leap years. Their goal, in addition to innovative technical solutions, was to ensure optimal legibility. While maintaining the off-centre design characteristic of the Lange 1 watch family, with its non-overlapping displays, they developed a completely new approach: a peripheral monthly ring that advances instantly on the last day of each month. This innovative complication, introduced with the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar in 2012, replaces the traditional 48-wheel system.

Balanced design and functionality
“Customizing this complication for the distinctive design of the Lange 1 posed a structural challenge for our developers, as the large outer ring had to be advanced by 30 degrees the instant the new month began. A cam stores energy throughout the month, ensuring the necessary power is delivered exactly at midnight on the last day of each month,” explains Anthony de Haas, Product Development Director. "The aesthetic features of the Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar ensure that the watch family's distinctive look is maintained. It therefore also symbolizes our philosophy of constantly breaking new ground in precision mechanical watchmaking."

A precise moon phase
The addition of a day/night indicator to the moon phase display also underscores the Maison's commitment to precision. A white gold moon moves across a two-level, blue-graded solid gold sky disc that rotates once every 24 hours, showing the lunar phases in 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds. Thanks to this intricate mechanism, the display only needs to be corrected once every 122.6 years. First featured in the Lange 1 Moon Phase in 2016, the moon alternates between a vivid blue sky by day and a dark blue sky illuminated by stars at night.

The exquisite craftsmanship of the Glashütte, Saxony, Germany, is further evidenced by the meticulously hand-finished and twice-assembled caliber L021.3, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. Technical features of this in-house movement include a unidirectional winding rotor with a 21K gold central element and platinum weight, a 50-hour power reserve, and an eccentric balance wheel operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The untreated German silver baseplate and bridges with Glashütte striping, the five gold chatons with blued steel screws, the hand-engraved balance cock and the swan-neck spring for regulating the rate are hallmarks of Lange quality, reflecting the Manufacture's meticulous attention to detail.

About A. Lange & Söhne
When Dresden-born watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his manufactory in 1845, he laid the foundations of Saxon luxury watchmaking. His prized pocket watches remain coveted by collectors worldwide. After World War II, A. Lange & Söhne was nationalized by the East German government and virtually disappeared. For a time, the brand seemed on the verge of fading from public memory. However, in 1990, Ferdinand Adolph Lange's great-grandson, Walter Lange, revived the brand. Today, the brand produces only a few thousand watches each year, primarily in gold or platinum cases. Every A. Lange & Söhne watch is equipped with a movement developed in-house, meticulously decorated and assembled by hand. With 71 in-house calibers developed since 1990, A. Lange & Söhne has established itself as a world leader. Signature pieces include the Lange 1, the first mass-produced model with an outsize date and the Zeitwerk, featuring a jumping numerals display. Featuring rare complications, the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater, Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon and Triple Split are timepieces that embody A. Lange & Söhne's dedication to further refining its watchmaking heritage. In 2019, A. Lange & Söhne opened a new chapter in its history with the launch of the ODYSEUS, a watch that combines lightness and elegance.
