[Office Worker Dining at 2:00 PM] A Japanese Tea Salon Connecting Paris and Tokyo: Hamacho's "Salon de the Papier Tigre"

Jan 25, 2019
The eastern side of Tokyo's 23 wards. The recently popular East Tokyo area, including Higashi-Nihonbashi and Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, is a place with a diverse range of faces, where old and new values overlap.

To the fashionable ladies reading FASHION HEADLINE, this month we'll introduce you to a new set of values we discovered in Hamacho, one of the towns in the area. We'll introduce you to the crossroads of Tokyo and Paris.

PAPIER TIGRE, known for its tiger logo icon, is a Paris-based product brand that designs paper-based stationery such as notebooks, diaries, and wrapping paper. Many people have surely been captivated by the colorful graphics, soft-to-the-touch paper, and playful ideas that you will notice once you use the brand. In September 2017, their first overseas store opened in Hamacho, and they currently operate two directly managed stores in Paris and Tokyo.

The Tokyo store is marked by a deep green noren curtain. In one corner of the store is a spacious counter-style Japanese tea salon called "salon de thé PAPIER TIGRE."

When opening a shop in Tokyo, the designers of Papier Tigre's home country of Paris created this salon with the desire to provide Japanese-style hospitality. Here you can enjoy Japanese tea that has been carefully brewed using water boiled in a tea kettle.

They also pay particular attention to the tea leaves. PNT (People and Tea) is a brand that visits organic tea farmers all over Japan and contracts directly with them to select only the rarest Japanese teas. Each week, four varieties are selected for your enjoyment. The colorful tea caddies represent the aroma and flavor of each tea leaf, and each one is said to be completely different in terms of bitterness, sweetness, depth, and refreshing taste.

The tea is carefully brewed by measuring the tea leaves and pouring hot water from a tea kettle. In this quiet space, steam rises and sunlight streams in through the windows. This place seems to have the little bit of space needed for a comfortable life. The shop is located in a two-story wooden building. The ceiling beams, which date back to when the shop was a printing shop and restaurant, still retain their original appearance and quietly watch the passage of time.

In this space, today I enjoyed the "Today's Three Sencha Teas," which are served three times in a teapot, and to accompany the tea, I was served dorayaki (a type of Japanese sweet) from Gyokueido, a Japanese confectionery shop in Ningyocho, next to Hamacho.

Today's 3 Sencha (780 yen). The tea leaves are PNT No. 12 Miyagi Farm "Hana Hoji"
Gyokueido Dorayaki (280 yen). We order sweets from popular shops in the Hamacho area throughout the seasons.

If you're in the mood for something a little sweeter, try a hojicha latte or matcha latte. Savor the flavor of the tea as the generous amount of milk in the glass mixes with the hojicha syrup, a truly luxurious experience.

Hojicha Latte (500 yen)

Of course, after enjoying the tea and sweets, we encourage you to fully immerse yourself in the world of Papier Tigre in the shop in the back.

The products are redesigned twice a year and will not be reproduced. This means that this notebook with this pattern is only available this season, so if you find one you like, get it quickly. The first new items of the year will be available in the store in spring.

One of the joys of the area is strolling at your own pace, discovering many new things, from bento shops and coffee shops that have been in business for a long time to newer coffee stands and bakeries.
