An exhibition exploring the lives of Japan and Denmark through design is currently being held at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

Event Date:2017.08.05-11.05
Aug 19, 2017

The exhibition "Daily Life - Signs of Awareness," commemorating the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Denmark, is running at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa until November 5th.

This marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation between Japan and Denmark in 1867. Against the backdrop of their respective histories and cultures, the two countries have developed, sometimes influencing each other, and their designs, in particular, are highly regarded as expressions of their cultural identity and aesthetic sensibilities. By delving into the designs of both countries, the exhibition examines their cultures, ways of thinking, and lifestyles. Curated by Hiromi Kurosawa, the museum's chief curator, and Danish designer Cecilie Mans, the exhibition aims to highlight the best aspects of both countries.

In addition, each exhibition room and project in the exhibition will be developed with a keyword. The exhibitions make the most of each space, from "Sign of the Beginning," featuring a replica of the original Danish copy of the Japan-Denmark Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation in front of Exhibition Room 7, to "MATERIALITY," showcasing highlights of Danish design in Exhibition Room 8, to "VOID/AIRY," which invites viewers to reflect on the existence and non-existence of objects in Exhibition Room 9. Additionally, the Lecture Hall hosts a series of talks and events related to design, education, healthcare, and urban planning. Six talks were held on August 5th, including "Peripheral Refinement: Japanese Simplicity and Danish Simplicity" by Japan Design Center President Kenya Hara and "Finding Your Own Pace: The Challenge of Being a Walker in an Age of Runners" by designer Louise Campbell. This event is limited to the first 80 attendees, and will run regularly through October. Additionally, there will be an event by artist Henrik Vibskov on October 9th, and another by artist Rosa Tornow Klausson from the 12th to the 15th.

In addition, artists exhibiting their works include Bay & Sebastian, Kai Boijsen, Nana Ditzel, Olafur Eliasson, Søren Engsted, Poul Kjærholm, Erek Maunussen, Wu Hajime, Sambuichi Hiroshi, and Suzuki Shunji + Kanazawa Institute of Technology.
