Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, a long-established Nara store, has teamed up with RENEW, an experiential market held annually in the Kawada district of Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, to host the four-day "RENEW x Dainippon City Sabae Expo" from October 12th to 15th.
Based on the concept of "a town for all young people aspiring to become craftsmen," RENEW launched in 2015 in the Kawada district, a small area with a population of approximately 4,300 that has gradually attracted young artisans and creators over the past decade. This year marks the third year of the event.
With a vision of "revitalizing Japanese crafts," the event aims to expand the circle of empathy between makers and users through encounters with craftsmen and dialogue with them. Approximately 70 workshops and businesses from across the region are participating. Workshops that are normally closed to the public will be specially opened to visitors, allowing them to see, learn, and experience the craftspeople's workplaces while also enjoying workshops and purchasing items.
Companies offering workshop tours and experiences include Urushirindo, Hacoa (Yamaguchi Kogei Co., Ltd.), Taniguchi Megane, Rokurosha, ataW (Sekisaka Lacquerware Co., Ltd.), and TSUGI.
In addition, from 7pm on the first day of the event, the 12th, a reception party will be held at PARK, a creative space renovated from a former eyeglasses factory that is scheduled to open this fall. A variety of content will be available, including a lacquerware bar where the lacquerware artisans themselves will act as bartenders and serve local sake, and workshops where you can experience the techniques of glasses and lacquerware.
