An exhibition exploring fashion and art from the late 19th century to the early 20th century will be held at the Yokohama Museum of Art

Feb 5, 2017

"Fashion and Art: Beautiful East-West Exchange," exploring fashion and art from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, will be held at the Yokohama Museum of Art in Kanagawa Prefecture from April 15th to June 25th. The late 19th century saw the rapid spread of Western fashion and lifestyles in Japan, and the export of Japanese art and kimonos sparked a Japonism boom in the West. This exhibition focuses on this period of fashion and art. Through a collaboration between the Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI), which houses one of the world's leading costume collections and engages in research, and the Yokohama Museum of Art, this exhibition explores the impact that East-West cultural exchange, with Yokohama as its central base, had on the lives and aesthetic sensibilities of people at the time. The exhibition will feature approximately 100 dresses and clothing from the Kyoto Costume Institute's collection, as well as approximately 200 clothing, crafts, paintings, and photographs from museums and private collections both in Japan and abroad. The exhibition will also feature "Made in Japan" items originating from Yokohama during the vibrant Meiji period. Through these works, visitors can trace how Japan and the West sought and developed each other's fashion and lifestyle cultures, and discovered new forms of beauty. Related events, such as gallery talks, lectures, and workshops, are also scheduled to be held during the exhibition. (Some exhibits will be changed during the exhibition period)
