Matohu's "STYLE*MEISEN" exhibition features new fashion designs for the revival of "Meisen"

Jan 22, 2017

Backed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the "STYLE*MEISEN" project, led by businesses in Chichibu and Ashikaga, has been launched to revive meisen as a clothing fabric. An exhibition will be held from January 25th to February 21st at Design Gallery 1953 on the 7th floor of Matsuya Ginza.

Meisen is a dyed and woven fabric that originated in the Meiji era and is known for its sophisticated "hogushiori" weaving technique, in which the thread is printed and then woven. From the Taisho to the early Showa eras, meisen was all the rage with its modern patterns. However, as demand for kimonos as everyday wear declined after the war, the production area declined, and today only a few companies remain.

As the designer for this project, matohu, renowned for incorporating Japanese aesthetics into fashion at the Tokyo Collection, has designed new meisen textiles and elevated them into a new fashion trend through the direction of a contemporary clothing brand.

On the first day of the exhibition, there will be a free talk event between matohu designers and meisen manufacturers from 5:00 pm to 5:45 pm at the venue, and a two-week limited reservation order event will be held in the event space on the 7th floor of Ginza Matsuya.
