Gucci establishes fund to support young Japanese musicians

May 23, 2013

Gucci's watch brand, Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry, has announced the establishment of the Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry Japan Music Fund to support young Japanese musicians. In 2012, the company partnered with the Recording Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Grammy Awards to launch the Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry Japan Music Fund with the aim of supporting and nurturing talented young musicians around the world. The project has already launched in China and the UK, with Japan now being the third country selected. The Japan Music Fund will support the activities of students at the Kunitachi College of Music, which has produced many accomplished musicians, including Joe Hisaishi and Masashi Akikawa. As the first project, the foundation will award one-year scholarships to two students, Ryota Sasaguri and Takumi Nakayama, from the university, and invite them to a camp program in Los Angeles this summer, offering them the opportunity to learn with music students from around the world. At a press conference held at Billboard Live Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo on May 22nd, jazz singer Juju, who has been appointed as an ambassador for the fund in support of its aims, appeared. She performed the jazz classic "Take Five" live with the two scholarship recipients and their professor, jazz pianist Makoto Ozone. Juju also commented, "I still have many dreams I want to achieve. I think it's wonderful that this fund supports young talent and sends more and more musicians out into the world." Furthermore, as part of its support activities for the Nippon Music Foundation, the company released the "Interlocking Watch Music Fund Special Edition." A portion of the sales will be donated to the fund.
