A press preview of Christmas cakes was held on September 26th at the Mitsukoshi Main Store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
Of the 65 types available for the Christmas season, approximately 30 were on display at the venue. One that stood out was "Bonhomme Doneige" (limited to 100 pieces, 7,000 yen), offered exclusively at the Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi store by "Glaciel," an ice cream cake specialty store in Omotesando. A hat-wearing snowman is made of mascarpone sorbet and almond dough, and is filled with strawberry compote and vanilla ice cream. "Noel Sapin Rouge" (limited to 100 pieces, 8,000 yen), exclusive to Mitsukoshi Isetan, is an adult flavor that combines champagne and strawberry sorbet. This marks Graciel's first time opening a department store. Other cakes available exclusively at the Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi store include the "Marie Antoinette Cake" (limited to 30 pieces, 8,000 yen) decorated with large ribbon-shaped sugar candy by "Debauve & Gallée & Anniversary," the light and flavorful rose-shaped shortcake "Take my heart 2014" (limited to 20 pieces, 12,000 yen) by "Mademoiselle C," and the pyramid-shaped "Christmas Japanese Chestnut Mont Blanc" (limited to 80 pieces, 4,500 yen) by "Pâtisserie Nishiyo Ginza."
While there are many stylish cakes that appeal to younger generations, there are also many traditional shortcakes that the whole family can enjoy. The lineup of satisfying cakes, including the "Super Christmas Shortcake" (100 pieces limited, 12,000 yen) from Hotel New Otani Patisserie Satsuki, which boasts the highest sales at Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi, and the "Strawberry Carol" (50 pieces limited, 10,000 yen) from Nihonbashi Sembikiya Main Store, has many repeat customers. The strength of Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi's Christmas cakes is that they can meet the diverse needs of all generations. Reservations are open from October 7th to December 15th.
