Palace Hotel Tokyo unveils edible Christmas cake featuring Santa hats and trees

Sep 11, 2014

On September 10th, the Palace Hotel Tokyo in Marunouchi, Tokyo, announced the Christmas cakes for sale at its pastry shop, Sweets & Deli. Seven types of Christmas cakes and Christmas breads were on display in a suite decorated with a Christmas tree and other decorations, creating a perfect Christmas atmosphere. Preparations began immediately after the previous Christmas, and the cakes were the result of repeated trial and error. Surprise treats like "Emotion" (¥13,000), which reveals a Christmas tree piled high with chocolate cream puffs when opened in a white chocolate gift box, and "Bonnet de Père Noel" (¥8,000), which reveals a cheesecake topped with Santa Claus-shaped chocolates when Santa's red hat is removed, are perfect for parties. Pastry chef Osami Kubota said, "We pursued new cakes and presented them in a way that's instantly recognizable. We created cakes that children would want to eat."

In addition to the Christmas wreath-motif "Couronne de Noël" (3,800 yen), the ornament-shaped "Sphères" (3,800 yen) decorated with cherry compote mousse, and the reindeer-motif chocolate cake "Ebene" (4,500 yen), there will also be the classic "Strawberry Shortcake" (5,000 yen) and the limited-edition "Mont Blanc" (5,500 yen) inspired by snowy mountains. Reservations for all of these will be accepted from October 1st until three days before the purchase date, and will be on sale from December 20th to 25th.

The traditional German Christmas cake, Stollen (2,100 yen each), will be available in three new varieties, including the classic version filled with dried fruit, a Japanese style finished with the scent of soybean flour and yuzu, and a new version with the flavors of hazelnuts and milk caramel. It will be on sale from December 1st to 25th, along with "Bella Becca en Saucisson" (1,100 yen), a yeast pastry from the Alsace region of France made with plenty of dried fruits and nuts, and "Panettone" (L 1,200 yen, S 400 yen), a traditional Italian bread made with fruit scented with liquor.

Reservations can also be taken from December 1st until four days in advance for the "Christmas Hamper" (6,000 yen), an assortment of baked goods such as stollen and ginger cookies accompanied by tea, honey, and jam, and the "Christmas Gift Roast Chicken" (7,500 yen for 4 to 6 people, 12,000 yen with champagne), which includes Daisen chicken and steamed vegetables, and more. These will be on sale from December 20th to 25th (reservations required).
