Cleon Peterson's first solo exhibition in Japan, depicting a "world lacking ethics," will be held at Diesel Art Gallery

May 22, 2016

Internationally acclaimed painter Cleon Peterson's first solo exhibition in Japan, "Into the Sun," will be held at Diesel Art Gallery in Shibuya, Tokyo, from May 27 to August 12. Cleon Peterson is a Los Angeles-based painter active around the world. His monochromatic paintings depict conflicting figures symbolizing the struggle between power and submission amid the changing structure of modern society. These dystopian scenes evoke philosopher Thomas Hobbes' definition of the natural state of mankind as "the war of all against all." He portrays displaced people finding hollow joy and meaning in vandalism, sex, religion, and drugs, describing a "gray world where lawbreakers and coercers are one and the same, where individual rights take precedence and ethics are lacking." This exhibition will feature more than 10 new paintings, including a large-scale piece. A collection of works not previously shown in Japan will also be available for sale. Through his work, he explores a new reality, a world where humanity is torn apart by conflict and disorder.
