Masahisa Fukase's first photo exhibition in seven years, "Hopeless Egoist," continues his quest for the question "What is myself?"

May 24, 2015

"The Hopeless Egoist," a solo exhibition by photographer Masahisa Fukase, who has had a profound impact on the Japanese photography world, will be held at DIESEL ART GALLERY in Shibuya, Tokyo, from May 29th to August 14th. Masahisa Fukase is a photographer known for his photographs of familiar subjects, such as his wife and family, crows, and cats. While focusing his lens on familiar subjects, he always pursued the question, "Who am I?" In 1974, he exhibited photographs of his wife Yoko at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, which was the first exhibition to introduce Japanese photographers to the world. He also attracted attention by showcasing photographs of his wife Yoko among the leading figures in modern Japanese photography. In 1985, he held a four-person exhibition, "Black Sun: The Eyes of Four," at the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, alongside photographers Shomei Tomatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, and Daido Moriyama. His work has also been exhibited at renowned museums around the world, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Cartier Museum of Contemporary Art. In 1992, he fell down the stairs at his favorite bar, suffering severe brain damage that put an end to his career as an artist. He passed away in 2012.

The title of this solo exhibition, "The Hopeless Egoist," is the title of an article that his ex-wife Yoko contributed to a special edition of the camera magazine Camera Mainichi, published in 1973. Based on Yoko's words about Fukase Masahisa in the magazine, "The me he photographed was undoubtedly himself," the exhibition will feature representative works by Fukase Masahisa, who remained silent for decades, as well as valuable unpublished works.
