New York Destinations to Visit by Bicycle: Blue Note Jazz Club New York [Pedal. Ride through New York.]

May 22, 2016
A new approach: cycling through New York. What does New York look like from a bicycle, not a taxi, subway, or on foot?

Yuki Goto of Manhattan bicycle shop CHARI&CONYC, LLC will guide you through New York's sights you'll want to see by bicycle, as well as recommended cafes and restaurants where you can take a break!

A faster way to travel than the subway or a taxi. That's the bicycle. Especially when traveling crosstown (east-west), there's no faster way to travel than a bicycle.

From the Lower East Side, where the CHARIANDCO store is located, we passed through Norita and Soho, enjoying the transition from the underground, down-to-earth atmosphere to the fashion district, before crossing town to the bar-filled Greenwich Village district.

This time, I recommend the Blue Note Jazz Club, the mecca of jazz. It's the most classic of classics, but because it's so classic, I don't often get the chance to go there when I live in New York. However, I go once every few years, and each time I experience its greatness.

It depends on the artist, but when I visited this time, the table charge was $75, which is a little on the pricey side, but it's worth it.

When I entered the bar, I was first shown to the bar counter, then to the back, where I was seated at a table crammed tightly together. The people sitting next to me at the same table (sharing a table is the norm) happened to be a group of four men weighing around 150kg, so I was forced to sit with half my buttocks hanging off the chair. But that can't be helped, this is America.

I called out to the waitress, but she was busy, and I couldn't even order a beer. I arrived too late. The regulars arrived an hour early, ate a meal, sipped wine, and waited for the performance to start. The performance began with a mix of customers: people who happened to be sightseeing, locals, and fans who have been following the performing artists for decades. The close distance between the performers and the audience is a plus, and the historic space only enhances the excitement of the music.
