Brooklyn is now available for a limited time at Shinjuku Isetan! Experience the city's culture as you stroll around

May 29, 2016

Isetan Shinjuku is hosting a limited-time shop called "BROOKLYN STYLE" at Center Park/The Stage #2 on the second floor of the main building until May 31st, showcasing items from Brooklyn-based brands and designers. As part of the "New York Week" fair currently being held at Isetan Shinjuku, the shop primarily showcases items discovered by Mitsukoshi Isetan buyers in the Brooklyn district of New York. The buyer explained, "The reason we focused on Brooklyn this time was because, upon visiting the area, we felt that Brooklyn is home to many young people who dream of living in Manhattan, a place full of unique and diverse energy, and a place where a new culture is being born." The shop will feature original tote bags discovered by the buyers while exploring Brooklyn and its surrounding areas. The buyer expressed his hope that, "Rather than simply introducing tote bags, we hope that customers will first experience the background, culture, and energy of the place where the bag was created."

Tote bags on display in one corner of the venue include a tote bag (4,500 yen) from the Wythe Hotel, which has become a symbol of Brooklyn; a tote bag (2,000 yen) from CAT BIRD, an accessory shop founded in Brooklyn; and a tote bag (8,000 yen) from CHELSEA MARKET.

The Wythe Hotel was a textile factory in the early 20th century, but was renovated into a hotel by Andrew Tarlow, who runs restaurants and shops in Brooklyn, and is now an iconic spot in Brooklyn. While the hotel features traditional interiors, it also mixes innovative designs throughout, truly telling the story of Brooklyn's history. Founded in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2004, Catbird is an accessory shop that uses recycled and fair-trade gold and sells select items from brands like TOCCA and JHON DERIAN. Its ambiance has made it a favorite among local Brooklyn women. Chelsea Market, meanwhile, is an indoor marketplace renovated from a former Nabisco Oreo cookie factory. It brings together famous New York shops, including bakeries, cheese shops, and wine shops, and has transformed into a massive marketplace visited by 6 million visitors annually from both within and outside the United States. At the venue, you can experience the "Brooklyn energy" that has made each of these popular New York spots over the past few decades, embodied in the tote bags on display. In addition to tote bags, there are plenty of other Brooklyn-inspired items available at the venue. Brooklyn-based designer Ulla Johnson will be showcasing oriental, nostalgic embroidery and print styling using natural fibers, while Bing Bang, a brand created by New York-based Anna Sheffield, will be selling jewelry, and oeuf will be selling miscellaneous items made from baby alpaca hand-knitted by artisans in Bolivia.

Furthermore, CORAL&TUSK, founded in Brooklyn in 2007 by designer Stephanie Housley and her partner, will be showcasing cushions and pillows embroidered with animals that have a somewhat surreal feel.
