Balenciaga presented its Fall/Winter 2016-17 men's collection. This collection, inspired by practicality, functionality, and everyday workwear, was inspired by the gardening clothes that founder Cristóbal Balenciaga created for his client, Mona von Bismarck. Reimagined for the modern era, the collection is practical, purposeful, and designed for real-life use. Aprons are crafted from leather, suede, and suiting wool to complement the garments worn underneath. Other garments draw on traditional staples of menswear, including army clothes, uniforms, sportswear, and suiting. Materials include stiff mesh neoprene and knits, as well as everyday fabrics like leather, suede, jewel-colored velvet, nylon in military tones of black, gray, and khaki, cotton drill, and wool. In keeping with the Cristóbal Balenciaga spirit, seams are kept to a minimum. Seams were removed from trousers and shoulders to streamline the silhouette when shaped. Trousers were wide or tight enough to cling to the legs, and coats were long and narrow, skimming the floor, or shortened with wide, squared-off shoulders. Accessories included latex-dipped Chelsea boots, bags inspired by army backpacks, and shearling scarves, which also appeared in the women's pre-fall collection.
