TeamLab launches new art project that blends into the city and nature

Aug 7, 2015

The ultra-technologist collective teamLab has launched the "Digitized City Art" project, in which cities become art while remaining urban, and the "Digitized Nature Art" project, in which nature becomes art while remaining natural.

Japan is home to many places with remarkable geographical features, rich historical backgrounds, and unique cultures. This project utilizes the unique characteristics of these locations and adds new value to them, transforming parts of the city into artworks in their natural state.

Until August 31st, "Drawings on the Water Surface Created by Carp Dancing with Small Boats" will be on display at Mifuneyama Rakuen, a 500,000-square-meter park in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture. Projections of countless koi swimming around the water surface of the large garden, a nationally registered monument and scenic spot, projected the image of the koi interacting with the boats, gathering around them when they stopped and avoiding them when they started moving.

Also, until December 25th, "Flowers and Fish - Sagami Bay Large Aquarium" and "Resonating Small Sea" will be on display at the Shin-Enoshima Aquarium in Kanagawa Prefecture. In "Flowers and Fish - Sagami Bay Large Aquarium," flowers bloom all over the Sagami Bay Large Aquarium, and the movements of the fish affect the flowers, causing them to transform forever. Meanwhile, in "Resonating Small Sea," the color of the light changes when a person approaches the glass surface of the aquarium, causing nearby aquariums to resonate, changing to the same light and playing the same tone.

Also, at Huis Ten Bosch in Nagasaki Prefecture, "Resonating Trees" are on permanent display. The illuminated trees change color when people approach, and emit a tone specific to that color. The trees on either side and the trees on the opposite bank resonate with each other, changing color and light.

TeamLab's responsive, sensitive artworks seem to be gradually evolving into their surroundings. It's likely to attract even more attention in the future.
