Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. and Mitsui Fudosan Group company Halekulani Corporation (headquartered in Hawaii, USA) are pleased to announce that Halekulani, Hawaii's leading luxury hotel, will reopen on October 1, 2021, following a large-scale renovation project that began in September 2020.
Halekulani has undergone several renovations since its opening in 1984, but this latest major renovation project marks the first time the entire hotel has been closed for business. In order to pass on Halekulani's more than century-old history to future generations, the hotel has updated the building's main facilities, maintained and improved basic performance, revamped public spaces, and renovated all guest rooms, including suites.
Known as "a place worthy of heaven," Halekulani has long been beloved by guests from all over the world as one of Oahu's leading luxury hotels. While maintaining the warm hospitality and traditions that are uniquely Hawaiian, the hotel has been reborn through renovations and is now a sophisticated facility. We look forward to the day when we can welcome guests back, with rooms, dining experiences, and amenities that celebrate Hawaii's unique environment, culture, and aloha spirit.

The Halekulani brand is entering a new era with the opening of Halekulani Okinawa, the second Halekulani, in July 2019; Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani, the former Waikiki Park Hotel, which underwent a major renovation and reopened in October 2019 with a new name; and the newly reborn Halekulani following this major renovation. With the three hotels cooperating and collaborating with each other, the Halekulani brand will continue to be a beloved "world-class luxury resort hotel."
【About the Halekulani Renovation】
In this renovation, the main entrance and gatehouse have been redesigned to offer a warmer welcome to guests while preserving the historic building's exterior. A fine art collection that evokes the history of Halekulani is placed in the lobby area, welcoming guests. The hotel's blooming plants, incorporating a new landscaping concept that utilizes the natural beauty of Hawaii, create a stunning landscape.
The guest rooms were designed by BAMO, a company that has worked on numerous luxury hotels, and feature a new interior design that inherits Halekulani's traditional "seven shades of white" design philosophy. To enhance a guest's stay, the interior décor and furniture emphasize ease of use and incorporate a subtle blend of European, Hawaiian, and Asian influences.
In addition, updates to the building's major equipment and improvements to basic performance have made it possible to install amenities and fixtures in guest rooms that were previously not available. This will help ensure a more comfortable stay for all guests.
House Without A Key, a popular restaurant where you can enjoy live Hawaiian music and hula dancing, has redesigned its entrance to offer panoramic views of the 130-year-old Kiawe Tree, one of the Halekulani's symbols, as well as Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. The restaurant is scheduled to reopen in late November 2021 with new features such as a new outdoor bar, a glass-enclosed open kitchen, and modern furniture.

の宮本です。 English: "Since its founding, Halekulani has been recognized internationally as a leading hotel, and its first-class facilities and attentive service, combined with the beautiful nature and culture of Hawaii, have earned it the recognition of guests, the Hawaiian community, and our own employees and their families. Going forward, together with Halekulani Corporation and its owner, Mitsui Fudosan, we will continue to carry on the spirit that has been built up over the years, pursuing even greater comfort for all guests who visit the hotel, and will pass on the renovated 'heavenly mansion' to future generations as a representative Hawaiian hotel."
Halekulani's History
Halekulani's Roots
Halekulani's roots date back to 1881, when Earl and Countess Lewers hosted fishermen in a beach house. The fishermen, who were so grateful for their warm hospitality, called the beach house "Halekulani" in Hawaiian, meaning 'a mansion worthy of heaven', and the name came from this. In 1917, North Shore hoteliers Kimball and his wife purchased the beach house and opened a hotel.

The Main Building, which still remains today
In 1932, the Lewers House (now the Main Building), modeled after a plantation mansion, was built to a design by C.W. Dickey. This Main Building remains the only building from that time. Its distinctive "Dickey roof" is an innovative, steeply sloping design that allows ample intake of Hawaii's cooling trade winds.
Mitsui Fudosan and the Halekulani Redevelopment
In 1981, Mitsui Fudosan acquired the former Halekulani, which at the time was one of Waikiki Beach's most prestigious hotels, despite being a two-story wooden structure. They dispatched three employees to the site and began work on a plan to revitalize the Halekulani as a premium hotel.
In formulating the plan, the design principles of "simplicity," "purity," and "elegance," inspired by the image of paradise, were adopted, and the following three themes were set:
1. Creating a "Mansion Worthy of Heaven"
Our goal was to preserve and further develop the space and warm hospitality worthy of the name.
2. Preserving the Historic Building
We sought to utilize the main building, which was completed in 1932, while harmonizing it with the latest facilities and equipment. The exterior image is unified by the Halekulani's iconic Dickey roof, and the distinctive tiled roof of the building exudes a gentle, comfortable atmosphere throughout the hotel.
3. Creating a peaceful space isolated from the city
The five buildings are arranged in the shape of the letter "E," with their backs to the city and facing the sea. To allow guests to enjoy views of Waikiki Beach, almost all rooms are designed to offer views of Hawaii's blue ocean over the pool or courtyard.

Opening of the new "Halekulani"
After approximately two years of construction following its acquisition in 1981 and a total project cost of approximately $115 million, the 16-story building with 456 guest rooms (currently The luxury hotel, Halekulani (453 rooms), opened in March 1984.
- Guest rooms with a clean, elegant interior based on a white theme;
- A swimming pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with a mosaic of 1.25 million glass tiles creating an orchid-like underwater scene;
- The French restaurant, La Mer, has been awarded the AAA Five-Diamond Award for 30 consecutive years.
In addition to the high quality symbolized by these features, the Halekulani rehired many of the employees from the previous Halekulani in an effort to provide the highest level of hospitality, and has garnered local attention and acclaim since its opening as a symbol of the Waikiki Renaissance.
Continuous efforts to improve service levels and added value through renovations
As its name, which means "a mansion worthy of heaven" in Hawaiian, suggests, since its opening, the Halekulani has continued to pursue the highest level of hospitality through high-quality service and elegant spaces. As a hotel that welcomes distinguished guests from around the world, we strive to improve our service levels, including by conducting employee training based on feedback from interactions between guests and employees. To meet the needs of a new era while maintaining our traditions and prestige, we have undergone three major renovations to update our guest rooms, public spaces, and facilities, and have added new facilities and guest rooms, including the Spa Halekulani, Hospitality Suites, Vera Wang Suites, and Orchid Suites.
The latest major renovation, which includes updating the building's main facilities, maintaining and improving basic performance, and updating the furniture and fixtures in all guest rooms, including public spaces and suites, has transformed the hotel into a new Halekulani.
