Aug 24, 2015

The 100th Anniversary Nika Exhibition will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo in Roppongi from September 2nd to 14th.
In 1914, emerging artists lobbied the Ministry of Education's Western-style Painting Exhibition for the establishment of a new "Second Department," but this was not realized. Following this, a group of volunteers came together to launch the Nika Exhibition, aiming to innovate Japanese Western-style painting. Based on the motto of "not being bound by school of painting, respecting new values, and protecting the creative freedom of artists," the exhibition has produced many renowned artists in the early days of Western-style painting.
Past participants include Yasui Aitaro, Kumagai Moriichi, Togo Seiji, Kishida Ryusei, Umehara Ryuzaburo, Koide Tarushige, Nakagawa Issei, Hayashi Takeshi, Saeki Yuzo, Miyamoto Saburo, Okada Kenzo, Foujita Tsuguharu, and Okamoto Taro. Works by many famous international artists, including Zieleniewski, Matisse, Derain, Picasso, Dufy, Braque, Monet, Bonnard, Bourdelle, Goya, Rouault, Rodin, and Modigliani, were also exhibited.

The "100th Anniversary Nika Exhibition" will feature a special exhibit of works by Western-style painters and sculptors who have made significant contributions to the exhibition. Works by past directors and works created specifically for the exhibition by members of the Design and Photography Clubs will also be on display.

In addition, a collaborative exhibition by volunteer members from the four Clubs - Painting, Sculpture, Design, and Photography - will be held in Lounges A, B, C, and D on the second floor of the National Art Center, Tokyo. The main theme is "Play," with a sub-theme of "100 Cats in One Position." In addition to the various cat-related artworks on display, lectures, gallery talks, and mini-concerts are also planned.

In addition, the "Legendary Western Painters: Nika 100 Years Exhibition," which showcases the 100-year history of Nika, is currently being held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. It is scheduled to be held at the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts from September 12th to November 1st, and at the Ishibashi Museum of Art in Fukuoka from November 7th to December 27th.
