The Tokyo touring exhibition of the international photography award, Prix Pictet, will be held from October 3rd to 18th at BATSU ART GALLERY in Shibuya, Tokyo.
Established in 2008, the Prix Pictet awards are based on a theme set each year, with approximately 700 photographers nominated by 275 photography professionals, and the winners are announced after a final jury review. To date, the awards have showcased outstanding photographers and their work who have contributed to addressing today's pressing social and environmental issues.
This touring exhibition, which will be held in Japan for the first time, will feature the work of 11 photographers selected at the 5th Prix Pictet, which was themed around "Consumption." The 11 finalists included the Grand Prize winner Michael Schmidt from Germany, Adam Barto, Allan Sekula, and Laurie Simmons from the United States, Motoyuki Daifu from Japan, Rineke Dijkstr from the Netherlands, Hong Hao from China, Mishka Henner from the United Kingdom, Juan Fernando Herran from Colombia, Boris Mikhailov from Ukraine, and Abraham Oghobase from Nigeria. The works of the 6th finalist, whose theme was "Disorder," will be exhibited at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in November. Furthermore, in recognition of Japan's pedigree as a globally active producer of outstanding photographers, a new award for Japanese photographers, the Prix Pictet Japan Prize - Japanese Photographer of the Year, was established. The first award will focus on young Japanese photographers under the age of 40 who were nominated for the Prix Pictet between 2008 and this year. The award is given to an artist who "has demonstrated excellent insight, is highly original, and has used photographic expression to challenge the various phenomena and issues facing modern society."
