What Mother's Day gift do people really want? Survey of 500 mothers

May 9, 2014

Trend Research Institute conducted a survey of 500 mothers in their 40s to 60s regarding their attitudes and expectations regarding Mother's Day gifts. Approximately one in three respondents expressed awareness and anticipation of Mother's Day. Specifically, most responses focused on whether they would receive a gift (62%) and the contents of the gift (53%). Many also expressed anticipation for a meal, with many looking forward to a meal with their children (51%) and a family meal (48%). When asked which Mother's Day gift they were most pleased with, "flowers" (47%) ranked first, far ahead of "food and drinks" (19%) and "clothes and accessories" (19%). Additionally, many respondents expressed appreciation for the thoughtfulness and growth they felt through gifts, such as "they gave me something useful after learning what I liked" (50s), "they gave me health products after knowing I was tired" (50s), and "they gave me health and beauty products, and I realized that my daughter has grown up and is now using those products" (60s). The top three Mother's Day gifts desired from sons were thoughtful gifts, such as a "shoulder massage voucher" (55%), a "handmade craft or picture" (52%), and "flowers" (50%). The top three gifts desired from daughters were "housework help voucher" (61%), a "handmade craft or picture" (59%), and a "shoulder massage voucher" (58%). The top three gifts desired from husbands were practical items, such as "health and beauty appliances" (45%), "digital devices" (41%), "experience gifts" (38%), and "clothes, accessories, and cooking utensils" (35%). Trend watcher Miyako Kudo commented, "In recent years, with the unsettling social situation and the impact of the earthquake and tsunami, more and more people are looking to properly express their gratitude." In the Mother's Day gift market, "mother-daughter bonding gifts," which focus on the mother-daughter relationship, are particularly popular. It's becoming increasingly common for children in their 20s and 30s to give their mothers gifts they think are good. In recent years, the key points for choosing a gift have been that it should be memorable and practical enough to be used for a long time. Experience gifts such as "parent-child dates" where parents and children can enjoy cruising or spa trips together are also gaining popularity.
