Increasing demand for Mother's Day gifts. Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi features "flower cakes"

May 7, 2014

Mother's Day falls on May 11th. Each shop on the food floor of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store will be introducing flower-themed cakes as Mother's Day gifts. We spoke with a buyer about this year's Mother's Day trends and noteworthy cakes.

According to the buyer, overall demand for Mother's Day gifts has been increasing by 2-3% annually, due in part to the trend toward cherishing family gatherings. Against this backdrop, demand for cakes and sweets is on the rise, as they allow families to share time together and chat.

This year's recommended cake is Mademoiselle C's "I love shopping -fleur-" (10,000 yen), featuring a bag filled with an overflowing bouquet of roses. Both the roses and the bag are edible. The white chocolate bag is filled with strawberry shortcake. A petite version of the same design, roughly one-third the size, is also available (1,000 yen). As a little surprise, a cake about twice the size of this one (not for sale) is displayed in a glass display case at Mademoiselle C's Nihonbashi food floor, creating an eye-catching effect as you enter Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi from the Ginza Line subway entrance. A female customer beamed, "It's like a dream cake. I'll get my child to buy it for me." According to a buyer, "I recommend this cake not only as a Mother's Day gift, but also as a wonderful present for a woman who has been kind to you. A bouquet of roses may be a bit of a challenge, but a cake is easier to give," suggesting the possibility of new demand from potential customers. We also recommend ANTENOR's "Carnation" (2,300 yen). The cake's carnation-like shape is achieved by scraping chocolate off a marble base and ruching it into a carnation shape. Additionally, Demel's "Tophen Choco La Combe" (2,000 yen) has a design reminiscent of carnation petals, and every year it receives many reservations from Demel cake fans. Noix de Beurre's "Mother's Day Decoration" (3,000 yen) is made with layers of fine sponge cake with an egg aroma and strawberries, finished with a smooth cream that melts in your mouth, and looks like the strawberries represent flowers blooming in a flower bed.

In addition to these, the store also has a wide selection of elegant sweets with a flower motif available at this time of year.
