Jul 26, 2013

The TAKEO KIKUCHI Shibuya Meiji-dori flagship store (6-25-10 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) and its architectural designer, Nagasaka Jo of Schemata Architects, won the Gold Award in the Shop Space category at the 2013 JCD Design Awards, sponsored by the Japan Commercial Environmental Design Association (JCD). Creative director Takeo Kikuchi was responsible for the store's concept, creating a three-story, street-level storefront measuring 13 meters high, 28 meters wide, and 7 meters deep. It features four entrances facing Meiji-dori, randomly arranged fixtures, and an interior that allows customers to wander freely without a cash register. Numerous sofas and benches are provided in the courtyard and inside and outside the store to allow visitors to relax. Kikuchi's studio is located on the second floor, where art exhibitions are held. The third floor houses a restaurant. The JCD Design Awards have been held since 1974 with the aim of honoring spatial designs, primarily for commercial environments. Since 2006, the awards have been open to overseas applicants, and this year 119 works were selected in the first round of judging. In the subsequent open second round of judging, Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku won the Grand Prize, nine works including the NEWLAND shopping complex in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture won the Gold Prize, and 18 works won the Silver Prize, including the Papabubble Daimaru Tokyo store, a candy shop designed by Jo Nagasaka, and the BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE Shinjuku store, designed by Moment. The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in late October.
