YCAM, approaching its 10th anniversary, is holding an archive exhibition showcasing projects by Daito Manabe, Yoshihide Otomo, and others.

May 15, 2013

The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM), which will celebrate its 10th anniversary this November, is currently holding an archive exhibition ahead of the "Future of Art and the Environment: Yamaguchi YCAM 10th Anniversary Festival" to be held in July. The exhibition will feature an archive of representative projects, including musician Otomo Yoshihide's "ENSEMBLES" exhibition, Mikami Seiko's installation "Desire of Codes," art unit exonemo's experiential work "The EyeWalker," and the interactive stage "true" by Fujimoto Takayuki, Shirai Tsuyoshi, and Manabe Daito.

The exhibition will utilize the building's central foyer, with Nagasaka Jo of Schemata Architects commissioned to design the venue. The interior features a mini-theater, while the exterior features six three-dimensional speech bubble-shaped theater booths, two of which are seated thanks to the steps of the grand staircase.

The keywords for the 10th anniversary festival, which begins in July, are "art," "environment," and "life." Ryuichi Sakamoto will serve as artistic director, and a wide-ranging program will include film and theater performances, as well as art exhibitions.

YCAM opened in November 2003 as a complex cultural facility housing a theater, exhibition space, a mini-theater for video, and the city's central library. It presents new artistic expressions involving media technology and the human body, collectively known as "media art," and attracts 700,000 visitors annually from Japan and abroad. Last December, the premiere of the opera "THE END" featuring Hatsune Miku was held there.
