An art exhibition by Barry Kamen has been held on the second floor of the Takeo Kikuchi flagship store on Meiji Dori in Shibuya since the 5th.
Barry is a member of BUFFALO, an artist collective centered around Ray Petri, the legendary stylist who led London culture in the 1980s. He currently works as a stylist and artist based in London.
In this exhibition, Takeo Kikuchi's studio space and sales floor will feature works using Band-Aids. The Band-Aids feature historical figures and collages of English words such as "IS," "be," "NO," and "to." "Band-Aids were worn by everyone in the Buffalo group. Also, in this day and age, we're in an era of budget cuts and cutting everything. I wanted to express the feeling of healing the wounds that have been opened by the cuts," says Barry.
The book he usually uses as a sketchbook will also be on display. When you open the pages, you'll see drawings and collages like scribbles, with the English words mentioned above marked on them. "People tend to focus on words with grand meanings, but I think it's these kinds of casual things that are important. I travel a lot, so I bring the book with me when I travel and draw. Or when I'm on the bus to my studio. Do I read this book? Not at all (laughs). It all started when I was a student and started using old books as sketchbooks to save money. I now have over 1,000 of them."
Works are available for purchase (from 160,000 yen). The exhibition runs until the 12th.
